Woman Dies, Three Children Injured in Taconic Parkway Crash

A solo car crash has led to the death of one woman and injuries to four others. On July 16, Nancy Sullivan, 57, of Papua New Guinea was driving north on the Taconic State Parkway in LaGrange, New York. At approximately 9:50 p.m., the 2016 Kia Sportage she was driving left the roadway and struck a rock embankment. Sullivan was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Her passengers in the Sportage were three children, 5, 8, and 10 years of age, who were not named by authorities. The children were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center. One child was listed as being in stable condition, and two in critical condition, as of Friday. Her fourth passenger, Skudy Bangan, 43, also of Papua, New Guinea, was taken to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with non-serious injuries. New York State Police in Poughkeepsie are continuing to investigate the accident, but have not yet determined what caused the crash. Witnesses are encouraged to contact police with any information about what may have led to the accident.

When a single-car crash occurs in which the driver is killed by the crash, it can be difficult to determine what caused the wreck. Fatigue, alcohol or simple negligence may be factors, as in any crash. It’s possible, however, that a detailed investigation may determine that other causes also contributed to the accident. For example, a mechanical failure in the car could have occurred that led to it being pulled off the road or caused the driver to lose control. In such an instance, an experienced attorney will know how to investigate and compile a case for wrongful death based on the defective manufacture of the car. Another cause could have been a hazardous road condition, such as an oversized pothole, spilled gravel, or uneven roadway. An experienced attorney will recognize conditions in the road that could have caused a wreck, and will know how to pursue damages from municipal or state governmental authorities responsible for the hazard. Additionally, witnesses to the accident may have noticed another driver who caused the accident but fled the scene, which a detailed investigation could discover.
